Summary :

                 Twenty-six years ago, in a third-year classroom of a middle school, there was a student named Misaki. As an honors student who was also good at sports, the charming girl was popular with her classmates. When she suddenly died, her classmates decided to carry on as if she was still alive until graduation. Then, in the spring of 1998, a boy named Sakakibara Kouichi transfers to that classroom, and he grows suspicious of the fearful atmosphere in that classroom. In particular, there is a beautiful, aloof girl named Mei Misaki who wears an eyepatch and is always alone drawing pictures.

Character :

Kōichi Sakakibara

A 15 year-old boy who transferred to Yomiyama North Middle School into the 3-3 class, but because of a pneumothorax, he had to be hospitalized just before the start of classes.


Mei Misaki

3-3 Classmate. She wears an eyepatch over her left eye, which is a puppet's eye, and sits in a scratched desk different from other students. Kōichi first meets her on the elevator of Yūmigaoka Hospital.


Fujioka Misaki

First introduced as Mei's "other half" and later as her cousin, she is the one Mei was delivering a present to at the Yūmigaoka Hospital's morgue. She was Mei's twin sister, raised separately after birth but they occasionally met each other. Died in the hospital from a kidney disease in April, thus making her the "Death of April".^[6]

Yukari Sakuragi

3-3 Classmate and one of the class delegates. She is killed when she trips down the stairs and impales her neck on the sharp end of her umbrella, right after being notified of her family's accident. Yukari and her mother were the "Deaths of May".^[5]


Yuuya Mochizuki

3-3 Classmate and a member of the Art Club. He is the one who informs Kōichi of the death of their classmate Ikuo Takabayashi by heart attack, one of the "Deaths of June". He appears to have a crush on Ms. Mikami.


Sanae Mizuno

She is a nurse at Yūmigaoka Hospital who has a younger brother in class 3-3. She tries to assist Kōichi in unraveling the mystery of Yomiyama North by giving him information she gleans from discussions with her colleagues and her brother. She is killed when the elevator she was riding drops down the shaft, with the ceiling coming down on her. She is one of the "Deaths of June".


Kubodera

3-3 homeroom teacher. After realizing that the countermeasures to the 3-3 phenomena didn't work, he kills his bedridden mother before stabbing himself to death in front of the class. He and his mother are two of the "Deaths of July".


Izumi Akazawa

3-3 classmate and friend of Yukari Sakuragi. In charge of countermeasures, she devises and upholds means to deal with the 3-3 calamity. She resents Mei and Kōichi for ignoring the rules, as she feels their actions undermine the countermeasures and cause the deaths to continue. She dies from falling off a veranda and breaking her neck when pursued by the assassin during the summer trip. She is one of the seven "Deaths of August".


Naoya Teshigawara
 

3-3 classmate and a friend of Kōichi's, whom he's nicknamed "Sakaki". A sports lover with a happy-go-lucky personality, he was asked to explain the situation to Kōichi but has trouble going through with it.


Tomohiko Kazami

3-3 Classmate and Kōichi's friend. He's one of the class delegates and an honor student. He is also Teshigawara's childhood friend.


Reiko Mikami

Kōichi's aunt from Ritsuko's side and class 3-3 deputy homeroom teacher. She gives her nephew advice on how to make it through Yomiyama through a series of "rules". One of them, is to separate the private life from school life, thus Kōichi addresses her as Reiko at home, and Ms. Mikami at school. She is revealed to be "another one" and the origin of the phenomena. Originally she died from drowning two years ago, when she was the homeroom teacher of class 3-3.


Katsumi Matsunaga

He is a Yomiyama North Middle School alumni from the 3-3 class of 1983. After graduation, he moved to Tokyo to pursue his studies. He became a banker but dropped out after a few years, and returned to Yomiyama to help with the family business. During 1983, he managed to successfully stop the calamity in class 3-3; the only recorded case of the phenomenon stopping halfway through the year. Afraid he would forget his findings, he recorded his theories and confession on a tape for the following years' students to find.


Tatsuji Chibiki

Librarian in charge of the No. 2 library room. He was the teacher for class 3-3 the "first year", the year Misaki Yomiyama died. Some years later, he resigned as a teacher but stayed on as the librarian. Since then, he's kept a record of the phenomena, the deceased and their connections, and shares his findings with Kōichi and Mei.
